New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be difficult, or even that life-changing, to still be positive. Simply experiencing new things outside of your school, circle of friends or town you live in can be a great way to expand your mind and help you focus on what’s important to you.
At Twisted Taco, an Atlanta Tex Mex restaurant , we have locations across a dozen college campuses. We know the struggle that college students face to not only balance their school, social, extracurricular and family lives, but also jobs, community service and basics like laundry and cooking.
With that in mind, we know that students don’t always have time to start ambitious New Year’s resolutions. To help, we’ve rounded up some ideas that can be implemented into anyone’s life to start 2021 off on the right foot.
For many students entering their first years of college, managing finances for the first time can be intimidating. But it’s important to remember that the financial decisions you make when you’re just starting out can follow you for the rest of your life.
Make a resolution to only drink coffee you’ve prepared at home to save cash you’d otherwise spend on an expensive latte at your local coffee shop. Or consider getting a part time job on campus to help cushion the necessary costs of going to school. The good thing about this is that it doesn't have to be all-consuming: just choose one area of your spending that you’d like to cut back on, and watch your savings pile up!
Faculty advisors are more than just a formality. They’re there not only to make sure you are taking the right courses to complete your degree, but also to offer advice, and maybe even become a mentor or job reference.
Many students don’t realize what a huge resource their advisor is. In most cases, they will be an expert in their field and can give you tips on how to achieve your career goals. If they are in the saem field you’re pursuing, even better. Don’t be afraid to ask for them to connect you with someone you admire or learn other networking skills. They’re there to help you, so make it a priority to take advantage of that!
With all of the stress college brings, it’s easy to get stuck in the mindset that good grades are the only thing that matters. But that’s not so. There’s no point in taking courses that aren’t going to teach you anything or prepare you for your chosen career.
Your future employers will be expecting you to have graduated with the knowledge and skills your degree implies, so take this year to focus on learning rather than being obsessed with straight A’s. Your transcript won’t be as impressive if you don’t have any practical know-how when you show up to the job day one.
It may seem like having fun isn’t something to put on a schedule or make a resolution for, but it’s very important to prioritize having a social life and fun outside of school.
Make a resolution to go on a fun date night every week, whether with a significant other or a group of your besties. Or budget some time to take a hike around your favorite lake or treat yourself to breakfast at your local cafe. Whatever it is that you consider fun, making time to enjoy yourself will help relieve the stress that is inevitable when you’re studying and preparing for exams.
“Brain food” is not just a gimmick. Protein is vital to healthy brain function, which is necessary when you’re up late cramming for finals. At Twisted Taco, we offer protein-packed healthy meals for students at a dozen college campuses in the southeast. From burrito bowls loaded with grilled chicken to taco salad with seasoned ground beef, Twisted Taco meals will keep you full and energized when you’re on the go.
If you’re lucky enough to have a Twisted Taco
